Legal Wyoming Sports Betting Overview

Sports betting is quickly becoming one of America’s most lucrative and popular pastimes. It’s beloved by a wide majority of Americans, which is why so many states are starting to legalize something that used to be exclusive to Nevada. In 2021, Wyoming decided to join that list.

Despite not having any professional sports teams, Wyoming has long awaited the legalization of sports betting. Support has gradually increased as bills were presented to the Wyoming House of Representatives and Senate. Now, the Equality State finally has something to show for it.

So, can you legally bet on sports in Wyoming?

As of April 6, 2021, sports betting is officially legal throughout the state of Wyoming. While that means you can legally bet on sports in Wyoming, there are still several rules and regulations that need to be set in place before the sports betting market officially launches in the state.

The good news is legislation has already passed and Mark Gordon, the Governor of Wyoming, has already signed that legislation into law. They now enter a holding pattern that could take several months to complete, at which point Wyoming residents will have sports betting options.

Latest News In Wyoming Sports Betting

In order for residents to begin legal wagering, the rules and regulations to sports betting in Wyoming need to be solidified by state legislatures. These rules and regulations will dictate how sportsbooks will operate in the state, which is something every state in the US must determine.

Let’s take a quick look at the timeline of events that eventually led to the legalization of sports betting in Wyoming:

  • February 28, 2020 - the HB225 bill fails with a vote of 32-27 in the Wyoming House of Representatives.
  • October 22, 2020 - the Northern Arapaho tribe announces its intent to open a retail sportsbook in at least one of its Wyoming casinos, despite it being illegal at the time.
  • March 10, 2021 - the HB133 bill passes the Wyoming House of Representatives with a 32-28 vote, despite failing the day before.
  • March 29, 2021 - the HB133 bill passes the Wyoming Senate with a 24-5 vote, including one abstention and a few minor tweaks.
  • April 6, 2021 - the HB133 bill is signed by Governor Mark Gordon, making sports betting legal throughout the state.
  • June 9, 2021 - the Wyoming Gaming Commission approves a set of rules and regulations, which must enter a 45-day public comment period.

While the rules and regulations have been presented by Gov. Mark Gordon and approved by the Wyoming Gaming Commission, they must now enter a public comment period. That is currently what Wyoming residents are waiting on as they near closer and closer to the official launch day.

When Will Sports Betting Be Live In Wyoming?

Since the moment sports betting was deemed legal on April 6, 2021, many residents have wondered when they’ll finally get an opportunity to wager on their favorite teams. The waiting period has already lasted several long months and that wait still has several more long months to go.

The good news is the Wyoming Gaming Commission worked to get the rules and regulations passed as quickly as possible. Because of this, sports betting in Wyoming was able to launch before the 2021 NFL season.

How We Got Here, a Timeline of Wyoming Sports Betting Law

The Wyoming sports betting law is going to welcome a number of options for Wyoming residents and a great deal of competition from big-name sportsbook operators throughout the country. It’ll act as a new source of revenue for the state of Wyoming, which is a big deal.

According to state law, there will be a minimum of five sports betting licenses handed out -- though it will run a mobile-only market. There will be the option of in-person betting, but only if tribal casinos decide to open retail sportsbooks -- there are four such casinos in the state.

In order to gain a license, operators will face an initial $100,000 fee for a five-year license. When renewing that license, an additional $50,000 fee will be assessed. The state will also assess a 10% tax on gross proceeds, with the first $300,000 targeting gambling addiction treatment.

Wyoming vs. Colorado Sports Betting

Wyoming will look to follow in the footsteps of one of their neighboring states, Colorado -- who officially launched sports betting on May 1, 2020. Colorado residents were given plenty of options, which include both mobile operators and retail sportsbooks inside their casinos.

Despite a lack of sporting events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Colorado still managed to accept a total of $2.3 billion in wagers in the first year. Colorado law allows for nearly three dozen sportsbooks to operate legally in the state, with more than a dozen already going live.

While sports betting will soon be legal in Wyoming, the state shouldn’t expect those same numbers due to their smaller population and lack of professional sports teams. The good news is they don’t have a limit as to how many sportsbook operators get licenses -- unlike Colorado.

Sports You’ll Want to Bet On In Wyoming

As of right now, it’s unclear which sports will be the most popular in Wyoming -- in regards to sports betting. Football is likely to be the biggest culprit, as it is in most states that already accept wagers, but Wyoming is difficult to judge and could truly go any which way with sports.

A large reason for this is due to the lack of major professional sports in the area. Not only are there no professional sports teams in the state of Wyoming, but only two of the six states that border Wyoming have major professional sports teams -- which includes Utah and Colorado.

Colorado is home to four professional sports teams -- the Colorado Rockies in the MLB, the Denver Broncos in the NFL, the Denver Nuggets in the NBA, and the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL. As for Utah, they only have one professional sports team -- the Utah Jazz in the NBA.

Daily Fantasy Sports & Horse Racing

For the Wyoming residents that simply can’t wait for the official launch of sports betting, there are several avenues that currently accept wagers -- including both Daily Fantasy Sports and Horse Racing. Both of these avenues are legal and live in the state of Wyoming.

Daily Fantasy Sports includes world-famous operators such as FanDuel, DraftKings, and Yahoo, which all offer a variety of contests and tournaments. As for Horse Racing, there are three tracks with live racing and 12 off-track betting facilities located throughout the state.

DraftKings recently released their 2021 NFL Week 1 Millionaire Maker contest, a $5 million fantasy contest with a $1 million top prize. FanDuel is likely to follow closely behind with their own Sunday Million contest. Building DFS lineups is a great way to kill time waiting for that official Wyoming sports betting start date.
